Although there are several other types of milling machines, this document will focus only on the vertical milling machine. A milling machine removes metal by rotating a multi-toothed cutter that is fed into the moving workpiece. The spindle can be fed up and down with a quill feed lever on the head.

how to operate CNC milling machine?
Preparation for CNC
1.Make sure the machine is ready to use and all doors are closed.
2.Check that no one else is operating the machine.
3.Check if the tool magazine is full and all tools are in position before loading the program in controller unit.
Loading the program into the control unit
1.Open NC programmer software on computer and load program onto USB stick. (Units will vary)
2.Insert USB stick into controller unit on milling machine. If message appears select ‘yes’ then ‘OK’.
3.Select program number to run and press enter then OK when asked that you want to start at line 1 (this will automatically run all lines of code).
4.If required, click on ‘offset’ button then select G54 or G55 etc., then click ‘go’ button then OK when asked if you want to proceed with changed workpiece or tool offset data (this will automatically change G54/G55/… offset data).
5.The spindle will now warm up for 5 minutes before starting cycle (if specified in code). If it does not,

Gather the G-code.
If you’re using an external CAM software package, skip to step 2. If you’re using Fusion 360, you can generate G-code via the Post Processor function in the CAM workspace. Select Toolpaths>Post Process and choose your desired Post Processor from the list. In this example, we’ll use the Fanuc OM post processor that’s included with Fusion 360 by default.
Set up your machine and material.
Once you have your G-code generated and saved to a file, connect your machine to your computer via USB or Ethernet cable and open it up in Easel (we’ll explain how to do this below). Load your material into your CNC machine’s work area and set zero at one corner of it, as shown in our video above.

what cnc machine uses r values for milling instead of i,j, and k？
The R values are used with a polar coordinate system. A polar coordinate system is where X, Y, and Z (and I,J,K) values are all relative to a center point instead of an origin point.
With a polar coordinate system the origin can be anywhere you want it to be. You don’t need an axis to be the origin either. Imagine drilling a hole in the center of a round part that doesn’t have a center axis. You could just put your center drill bit in the middle of the round part and use that as your origin without having to touch off on an axis. Since there are no axes you start using letters instead of numbers for your movements such as I,J,K,R, and C.
The R value means “Radius”. It’s like using X and Y but you’re always moving at an angle from your center point in a circle or arc around your center point.
The C value means “Center”. This is usually used with an arc command so the machine knows what the center of the arc is if it isn’t obviously at 0,0.

The Z0 is the zero of the height and it is not necessarily always in the same place. The most important thing that determines where the Z0 is located is how you will put your workpiece on the table.
Z0 should be considered as a reference point and not as a dimension. So when you want to cut a piece of wood at a certain height, you can go from your table to + 30 mm, for example, and you will be 30 mm above the table but not necessarily 30 mm above your workpiece.
So if your Z coordinate is 0 (whatever it means) and if you have to go down 40 mm with your tool, then depending on where your workpiece is placed on the table, this could mean that the tool of your CNC machine goes through your workpiece or that nothing happens because you are already below!
what if the part to be machined in a CNC milling machine is to big？
The machine is designed to hold parts that are larger than the travel of the mill.
To do this, the table has a work offset function. You set it up with the part to be machined clamped on the table and then tell the machine where in space the zero point is.
Once programmed, you unclamp your part and move it to a new location on the table. The machine will still cut in exactly the same place every time you run that program because it uses the offset as well as your program coordinates.

how to use tool compensation commads in CNC milling machine？
Tool compensation is the error difference between a desired tool path and the actual tool path. Tool length offsets are used to compensate for the length of the tool. Radial tool holders are not typically used with CNCs, so there is no need to account for radial runout in tool length offsets.
To compensate for the length of a tool, you define an offset value that represents how far the tip of the tool is from the spindle centerline. This offset value will be positive if the tip is above and negative if the tip is below. You can think of it as how deep you would need to plunge to get to the tip from a position directly over it at Z0.
By default, all CNC machines use G43 to turn on an automatic compensation command and G49 to turn it off. The distance from Z0 to the tip of a particular tool is stored in a table called a table number or register number that corresponds with a particular tool number.
When using G43, you specify which tool you are using by entering its corresponding number after T (for example, T3). This tells your machine that it needs to automatically apply this value for each move as long as you have left G43 active.
