5 axis CNC machine FAQ – I have seen some questions about 5 axis CNC machines on various forums and will try and answer them as best I can here.

what is a 5 axis CNC machine?

how to build a 5 axis CNC machine?

I am currently building a 5 axis CNC router. I’ll have the entire thing completed and documented by May of 2007.
My machine has a cutting area of 30x30x12 inches.
It is built with an all-aluminum frame, 8mm linear ball bearings, and a belt drive with ball screws on the X and Y-axis. I’m using a 1/4-10 acme rod with anti-backlash nuts for the Z-axis. In order to reduce backlash and slop in the system, I designed a custom bearing carriage that will have 2 ball bearings on each side of the ballscrew and 6 angular contact bearings in the center (3 on each side) to preload the ballscrews. The center section is made from 6061 T6 aluminum. The sides are made from 304 stainless steel since it is stronger than 6061 T6 at this size.

what is a good size travel for a 5 axis CNC machine?

Setting up the work offset table for 5 axis cnc machine is much more complicated than setting it up for 3 axis milling machines. It can be done by a professional machinist but it is not easy to do it by a novice.
On a 5 axis milling machine, the work offset table is made up of seven rows and six columns. The first row and column are left blank so that they don’t take part in any calculations, only the second row and column are used for making calculations.
The second row and column of the table will hold the initial values that you wish to set for your part program. They will also help you set up other values in the remaining rows and columns of the table.

Generally, here are the details:

how long does it take to learn to program 5 axis CNC machine?

The time it takes to learn CNC machining depends on the type of machining to be done. For example, programming a milling machine with Fanuc controls or Haas controls can take less than half the time needed for other controls. The Fanuc and Haas control are similar in many ways and easy to learn.
The basic concepts are the same whether you are running a lathe or a milling machine. However, there is more information to keep straight when programming a multi-axis lathe as opposed to a 3 axis milling machine.
Programming also depends on how much training is given by the employer. A high school graduate with no experience working in a shop but was trained well by his employer might take 3 months to become fully proficient. On the other hand, an experienced machinist might take 6 months to learn to program if he did not have much previous experience with CNC machines and was not given thorough training by his employer.
