How does a CNC Plasma Machine work?
A CNC plasma cutter is an automated machine that uses a high-velocity stream of ionized gas to cut through electrically conductive metals. These metals include steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass and copper, among others. The plasma cutting process uses a gas and an electrical arc, which is then focused through a constricted opening (orifice) in a plasma torch.
As the electrical arc runs through the gas, it turns some of that gas into plasma that reaches temperatures of up to 30,000 degrees Celsius (54,000 degrees Fahrenheit). That’s 10 times hotter than the surface of the sun! Consequently, this type of heat has no trouble melting through most types of metal with ease.

It is not easy to make a CNC plasma machine but if you have the right tools and resources you can do it.
First, we need to understand what a CNC plasma machine is and what it does. A CNC plasma machine uses high voltage electricity to cut electrically conductive metals such as steel, aluminum, brass, copper, etc. How does it do this? High voltage electricity ionizes the metal into plasma which then cuts through the electrically conductive metal at extremely high speeds. The extremely high temperatures cause the metal to melt away and leave an extremely smooth finish on the metal surface.
A computer controls the movement of the cutting head based on a program (G-code). The material is placed on a table which moves in all three dimensions (x, y and z). The table can be made from various materials such as wood, steel or aluminum.
The most commonly used software for operating a CNC plasma machine is LinuxCNC (formerly known as EMC). LinuxCNC has been used for several years now and works with all types of applications such as engraving machines, robotics and 3D printers. LinuxCNC is open source software meaning anyone can use it without paying any fees or royalties to anyone else.

The easiest way to connect a motion controller like the Scan Anything to a CNC system is to use the E-stop and limit switch inputs.
The E-stop input is used as a hard stop, while the limit switch inputs are used to determine the home position. The process is relatively simple.
Step 1: Connect your machine’s E-stop and limit switch outputs to the controller as shown in Figure 5.
Step 2: In Mach3, select the ports and pins tab on the config menu. See Figure 6 for an example configuration of the E-stop and limits. If you have the correct firmware version loaded into your controller, you can ignore the Estop option. Also select active low for your limit switches if they are normally closed (NC).
what computer for CNC Plasma Machine with?
The problem is that the machine came with a laptop running XP. Of course, i just heard that windows 7 is the last OS that will support parallel ports. I’m not sure if this is true or not. The laptop is an nforce 410M based machine with an AMD Turion 64 X2 CPU. It doesn’t have a parallel port and i’m not sure how to get one to work on it…
So, any suggestions on what to do? I was thinking of getting a cheap used PC and loading XP on it and using it as a dedicated PC for the plasma table (i also have a CNC router that would use the same PC). The plasma table came with a dongle for the software so i can install it on any number of computers.

I have a CNC plasma machine with long motors and drivers and a breakout board with a parallel port. The computer is an old pentium3 600mhz, computer was working fine until I had to reinstall the operating system after a hard drive failure. What I had was windows XP home, Mach 3, and bobcat software all working fine, so I installed Mach 3 and bobcats CNC software on the new hard drive and now when I got the machine to cut it cuts for about 30seconds then the computer freezes, if I restart it does the same thing over again, I know it’s not hardware because when I reinstall XP it cuts but as soon as I install mach3 it does the same thing . Any help would be appreciated.

A CNC plasma machine is an electrically charged gas, plasma, that is the fourth state of matter (solid, liquid, and gas being the other three). A plasma cutter uses this gas to cut through materials such as steel. These machines are used in a variety of different settings for construction, carpentry, and a number of other industries.
CNC stands for computer numerical control. This means that the machine is controlled by a computer. Often, these machines are also automated so that they can run without much human assistance.
Plasma comes from regular air and is made up of oxygen and nitrogen. The chamber in which the plasma gas is created has positively charged electrodes (anodes) and negatively charged electrodes (cathodes). A high-energy electrical current moves between the two electrodes and ionizes the air between them to create plasma.
Because CNC plasma machines can use an automated cutting head, they can cut through many materials including aluminum, copper, brass, mild steel and stainless steel. They can cut through thick materials up to 1-1/2 inches in thickness as well as thinner sheets of metal like 26 gauge steel.

Cut height is the distance between the tip of the consumable and the material surface. This distance should be consistent and is dependent on the plasma power source, amperage, and pierce delay set at.
For example, if you have your plasma set at 75 amps and cut 3/8 inch plate all day long, you will have a very consistent cut height. If you change to 1 inch plate, that same setting at 75 amps will give you a much larger gap but it will still be consistent. With thicker materials, it is important to understand that even though your cut height is larger with thicker materials, it is still very consistent.
Sometimes people who are new to CNC plasma cutting think that they need to lower their tip so they can get a “pierced hole”. The tip doesn’t need to touch the material surface in order to pierce it. In fact, maintaining a consistent gap makes for a more reliable pierce process because there is no variability due to tip wear or different material thicknesses.
The proper way to adjust for different materials is by using Pierce Delay. This setting tells the machine how long to wait after moving into position before it starts firing the plasma arc.
what cut height for 3/8″ steel for cnc machine plasma?
I’m in the process of calibrating my CNC machine plasma (Hypertherm Powermax 45) with a floating head, and I’ve found that I can’t find the right settings.
I just tried cutting 3/8″ steel using pre-heat, piercing height and cut height settings of 0.125″, 0.125″ and 0.250″. The result was a 1/2″ cut through the material.
I’m looking for some help on what height settings to use with 3/8″ steel since this is the main material I’ll be working with.
Piercing height: 0.125″
Cut height: 0.250″
how to make patterns for a plasma CNC machine?
With the arrival of our new plasma machine we had to figure out how to go from a drawing on paper to a file that could be used by the cnc software. After a couple days of experimenting this is what we came up with:
1. Create your design in illustrator, inkscape or any other vector drawing program.
2. Output as svg
3. Import the svg into Inkscape, which will allow you to create a multi-sheet pattern if needed.
4. Export as dxf
5. Import dxf into Sheetcam and post process for Linuxcnc

You will need a PC with two or three PCI slots for the parallel port cards. You might need a special cable for the parallel ports. You will also need software to run your machine. If you want to use Mach3 then you will want something with Windows XP. I recommend getting something used that is more than 8 years old but not more than 12 years old. There are a lot of small business and school computers that have been retired and can be purchased cheaply on eBay or other sites. I would avoid Windows Vista or 7 if I were you because they are just too slow for CNC.
I do not know what drivers you are talking about, so I cannot help there.

When using a plasma machine to cut metal, it is essential that the operator knows exactly how to turn on the machine without causing any damage. A plasma cutter uses pressurized gas to make cuts in metal, and if this gas isn’t managed properly, it can cause damage to the machine or even cause an explosion.
Turn on the plasma cutter.
Press the “On” button for the air compressor system. This will turn on the air compressor which supplies air pressure for cutting.
Check the gauge on the air compressor to ensure that it is at 100 p.s.i., which is needed for cutting metal with plasma. If it is lower than 100 p.s.i., wait until it reaches that level before continuing.
Attach a regulator to the torch head of your plasma cutter, and attach a gas line from your air compressor system to this regulator by screwing it into place with a wrench.
Place an electrode into your torch head, ensuring that it is correctly positioned against the front of the torch head. Screw the electrode cap onto your torch head, locking it into place and keeping it secure while working with your plasma cutter!
