How to cut a phone shape into a piece of wood without a CNC machine?
How to cut a phone shape into a piece of wood without a CNC machine? By using a router it is possible. I’m sure you’ve seen an example of that on the Internet. But many people don’t know how to make it by themselves. So, I tried to make detailed instructions for you.
First, you want to draw the shape of your phone on a piece of paper.
First, you want to draw the shape of your phone on a piece of paper. Draw it as if you’re looking down at it from above. Then, you will use this template to trace the shape onto your wood. I used a piece of 1/4″ thick birch plywood, but any similar wood would work fine. You will first use a pencil to trace around your template and then go over that with a pen or marker, which will make your line easier to see when you are ready to start cutting.
Finally, take the wood and place it on top of an empty cardboard box. You want some give behind the wood so that when you cut into it, the blade won’t break through the cardboard box and scratch anything below. Now look at your drawing, and think about how you can cut all the way around without having to lift up your saw in between cuts. In my case, for example, I started by making one long cut across the top of my design. Then I made one long cut down one side. Then I went back up and made another long cut across the top. Finally, I made another long cut down the remaining side, thereby going all the way around my design without having to stop or pick up my saw anywhere!
Get a piece of wood. any kind of wood will work, your design might look best if you find a more exotic piece. The grain and color can contribute to the overall look of your design.
Next, you’ll need to design what you want to cut out into the wood. The easiest way to do this is with an app like Adobe Illustrator, Powerpoint, or even photoshop works! For this tutorial I made a simple iPhone template in illustrator, it even has lines for drilling holes for the screws and for cutting out for the power button.
It’s important that your artwork be set up correctly so that when you print it out on paper it is the same size as your wood. For example, if your wood is 8 inches wide then you’ll want your artwork to be 8 inches wide when printed. When everything lines up perfectly on paper then you’ll know it will line up perfectly on the wood as well.
Next get an Xacto knife and start cutting!
Its pretty easy to just trace the outline of a phone onto the wood, and then start cutting. After you’ve cut out the shape, you can use a router to create a beveled edge around the piece so that we can fit our glass on top of it. If you don’t have a router, it’s perfectly fine if the edges aren’t beveled as long as they’re not jagged.

Start slowly, follow your line! If you mess up or make it the wrong size, don’t worry you can always sand it down or cut it into a different shape.

When I was cutting this phone out I had to go slow around the curve of the top and bottom of the phone. This way I made sure to get a nice curve without splintering the wood.
You can also put your wood in a vice so that i stays still for easy cutting.
The first thing we need to do is cut a piece of wood. You want to make sure you have a board long enough so that it can span the distance between your two posts.
Next, we will put our wood into the vice and begin cutting it down. You want to make sure you have a sharp blade. If your saw is dull, then you may end up with a rough cut which will look bad and take longer to cut through the wood.
We cut into the wood until we reach our desired length. Once we have reached this point, we will remove our saw from the workpiece and place it on top of another piece of scrap lumber or plywood so that it does not get damaged when cutting through the material below it.
Now we want to make sure that everything is even all around our phone shape before moving onto step two which is drilling holes for screws in each corner of where you want them to go later on when putting together your phone stand.
Once you have your shape cut out, sand it down and paint whatever color youd like!
Now that you have your shape cut out, you need to sand down the edges and paint it, if desired. I painted mine with a couple coats of white paint that I had laying around.
Lets talk about my paint for a second. Ive used this kind of paint on so many projects now and it has always been great for me. Its cheap, it sticks to lots of surfaces, it doesnt require priming and it comes in a ton of colors. Seriously, its probably the best basic craft paint out there.
if you need to cut a phone shape into a piece of wood without a cnc machine then use my method.
If you need to cut a phone shape into a piece of wood without a CNC machine then use my method. I tried to cut it with a CNC machine but because the wood was too soft and the file was too big the wood broke. This is how I did it:
1. Get a piece of wood at least 5cm thick (I used oak)
2. Take your phone and stick some masking tape on the back so that you can draw on it
3. Put your phone on the wood, trace around the outside with a pencil, then draw another line about 1mm inside that line.
4. With a jig saw cut along the inner line, then sand down all of the edges until they are smooth
5. To mount your phone in there you will need to make some brackets out of metal or plastic or something (I used brass). These will support the phone from underneath (see picture).
